Monty Python World Origin Site Unveiled
On 17 May 2025, Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam unveiled a World Origin Site plaque at Aroma Spice (formally The Light of Kashmir) in Hampstead - the birthplace of Monty Python.
Founding members of Monty Python - Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin - met for a meal at The Light of Kashmir Tandoori in Hampstead in May 1969. This significant meeting over a convivial curry produced one of the most influential comedy groups of all time. Their groundbreaking approach to making television tore up all the rules and put them on the path to international fame. The Monty Python team went on to produce best selling books and records, controversial and much loved films and some of the world’s most memorable live shows. The origin site of Monty Python will now be marked at the Aroma Spice restaurant, formerly The Light of Kashmir, in Fleet Road, Hampstead.
World Origin Site.org was set up to mark and celebrate any site where something significant has happened in the making of the modern world.
“Normally we are celebrating sites where something was invented or discovered.”said Martin Wilkie, founder of World Origin Site, "but we were able to mark the first performance by The Beatles in Liverpool recently and to be able to do this for Monty Python, arguably ‘The Beatles of Comedy’ is truly unique. Their work changed so many aspects of the media and they have created some of the best known sketches, images and phrases that still resonate around the world today.”
This particular World Origin Site plaque also echoes Terry Gilliam’s famous Monty Python foot stamping on the logo at the top of the plaque. Martin Wilkie went on to say: “Normally we are very particular about our plaques. Others celebrate Marconi, Baird and Fleming and we wouldn’t dream of messing with the design but having our globe squashed by that famous foot was just too funny to resist, Python all over!”
